How to turn Excel data into a map

Prepare two columns—place name and value—then use EasyMap as an online Excel-to-map tool. Confirm areas on the map, review matches, and create a choropleth, proportional bubble map, or map-based bar chart.

The important part is not a formula. It is keeping the administrative level, selected area, and spreadsheet names consistent. Test four rows first, then add the complete table.

1. Prepare two columns

Put administrative area names in the first column and numeric values in the second. If the map compares cities in Guangdong, every row must represent a city. If it compares provinces across China, every row must represent a province. Do not mix Guangdong Province, Guangzhou City, and Yuexiu District in one dataset.

Copying from Excel preserves tab separators, which EasyMap reads directly. CSV commas also work. Leave missing values empty instead of entering words such as “unknown” in a numeric column.

2. Select and confirm the map area

Choose the map data, administrative level, and parent area before pasting. To compare cities in Guangdong, use Detailed China Map → City → Guangdong Province. Click a map area to confirm the corresponding selection; use Select all when the whole current list is needed. At the root level, Select all also turns on multi-select so the action remains visible and predictable.

Common mistake: a short name such as “南沙” may match “南沙区”, but short, duplicated, or out-of-scope names are not forced into a result. Review them in the match table.

3. Paste and review the matches

Open Paste Table and paste both columns. Match Review keeps the original text beside the standardized map name. Check unmatched rows, ambiguous rows, and empty values. Editing a value updates the map immediately; clicking a mapped area highlights its review row so you can find and correct it quickly.

4. Set labels and the legend

Open Labels early, before fine-tuning colors. Area names identify the map units, Values add numbers only when the map has enough room, and Legend can be shown or hidden for both preview and export. Enter a unit once to place it in the legend title rather than repeating it on every feature. You can also change the label language, font size, no-data contrast, title, and north arrow.

5. Choose a map form and colors

Continuous rates and standardized indicators usually work as a choropleth. Proportional bubbles emphasize magnitude, while map bars help compare a small number of areas directly. Start choropleth maps with four to six classes.

6. Export the map

Review the title, unit, labels, and legend before export. PNG and JPEG fit slides directly; SVG remains editable in vector software. A4 at 300 PPI is suitable for print and reports, but produces a larger file.

Common questions

Do I have to upload an Excel file?

No. Copying and pasting two columns is usually faster. CSV files are parsed locally in the browser, and the page does not automatically upload your business data.

Are administrative codes required?

No. Most users can match supported place names directly. Codes are useful when your source data already follows a standard coding system.
